We're featuring a number of titles related to recent and upcoming programs at the Yiddish Book Center. The range of authors and topics include: Yiddish writer Chaim Grade, whose life and work were the subject of a weekend conference; Yale historian Timothy Snyder, whose recent book Bloodlands on the mass murders of Hitler and Stalin, was hailed as "a new kind of European history"; Ilan Stavans' memoir, Return to Centro Historico: A Mexican Jew Looks for his Roots; and Once@9:53 a.m., an exhibit based on a fotonovela by Ilan Stavans and Marcelo Brodsky that includes more than 100 visuals tracing the streets of Buenos Aires' Jewish community several hours before a devastating terrorist attack.
Yiddishkeit, a comic anthology that traces the influence of Yiddish from medieval Europe to the tenements of the Lower East Side, is one of many new titles now available in the bookstore. Along with recently released titles that focus on Yiddish culture and history are also fiction and non-fiction titles by both well established and emerging new new authors.
Interested in learning Yiddish? The Bookstore offers books and CDs for the beginner to the advanced student. Along with the book, Learning Yiddish in Easy Stages, an audio CD of the lessons, and an answer key are also available.
The Klezmatics, On Holy Ground, is a recently released feature-length documentary about the Grammy Award-winning, New Yorfk-based Klezmer band. The film chronicles the Klezmatics over a three year period capturing the bands highs, lows, and relentless marcdh forward. The Bookstore offers a wide-range of titles on muisc and film, as well as a varied selection of DVDS and CDs.
